Inappropriate behaviour?

Media Watch: Episode 4, 10/3/2008

Football commentator Clint Wheeldon is an obvious first target for Media Watch’s first story. His “Fouling up” of the commentary manifested itself in an unscripted and inappropriate “The Tigers have fucking lost it”. This was considered to be, and rightly in my belief, inappropriate for an afternoon timeslot in which children and families may have been listening.

Football in Australia has been touted and defended as a family friendly game – with players often facing tribunals for inappropriate behaviour such as bad language or violence on the field. It leads one to wonder if Wheeldon will face a tribunal similar to those of the game’s players, or if it will be considered a slap on the wrist offence, and then back to broadcasting.

Speaking of inappropriate activities within family time slots, a streaker at a recent one- day match between Australia and India saw a seemingly irresistible media glut on the incident. While Channel Nine, the station airing the game, replayed the a close up of the streaker's antics, despite their family friendly policy maintain a more modest approach. This was not unlike the tactic other so called family newspapers took. The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age both airbrushed the 'small problem' to save the reader’s modesty. However, there was no caption displaying the fact that the photograph had been altered, and this was despite the fact that the unaltered photograph was available on the paper’s website.

If news providers want to keep the integrity of the news itself, then perhaps they should choose one course of action and stick to it, rather than running two pictures, one without the notification of digitally remastered.
